In a monumental achievement for India’s space program, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is gearing up to launch the much-anticipated Chandrayaan-3 mission today. The ambitious lunar exploration mission aims to land softly in the South polar region of the Moon, where significant scientific discoveries are expected.

Led by Mission Director Mohan Kumar and Project Director P. Veeramuthuvel, Chandrayaan-3 marks a significant milestone in India’s space exploration endeavors. Under the patronage of Dr. Rajendra Singh, the Minister of State for Space Affairs, this mission is poised to push the boundaries of lunar research and pave the way for future scientific advancements.

The state-of-the-art LVM3-M4 rocket, standing tall at 43.5 meters and weighing a massive 3900 kg (640 tonnes), is scheduled to lift off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at precisely 14:35:17 IST. Powered by the cryogenic C20 engine, developed by the Liquid Propulsion System Centre – IPRC, the rocket boasts impressive capabilities to propel the mission towards the Moon.

Equipped with a 758-watt solar panel, the LVM3-M4 carries three main components: the Lander Payloads, the Rover Payloads, and the Propulsion Module Payload.

The Lander Payloads house three cutting-edge scientific instruments. RAMBHA-LP (Radio Anatomy of Moon Bound Hypersensitive ionosphere and Atmosphere, Langmuir probe) will measure plasma density and variations near the lunar surface. ChaSTE (Chandra’s Surface Thermo-physical Experiment) will examine the thermal properties of the polar region’s surface. ILSA (Instrument for Lunar Seismic Activity) aims to study lunar seismicity, unravel the lunar crust and mantle structure.

The Rover Payloads comprise two scientific instruments. APXS (Alpha particle X-Ray Spectrometer) will analyze the chemical composition and mineralogy of the lunar surface, while LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscope) will determine elemental composition in lunar soil and rocks.

The Propulsion Module Payload, featuring the SHAPE instrument (Spectro-polarimetry of Habitable Planet Earth), will conduct experimental studies on Earth’s near-infrared spectro-polarimetric signatures, enhancing our understanding of habitable planets.

Chandrayaan-3’s primary objective is to explore the lunar surface meticulously, with a particular focus on the water, ice, and valuable minerals potentially contained within the Permanently Shadowed Craters in the Moon’s South polar region.

Following today’s launch, the spacecraft is expected to reach the Moon’s vicinity by August 5, 2023. Subsequently, on October 23, 2023, the lander will commence its descent, embarking on an intricate landing sequence in the South polar region.

It is worth noting that India’s space agency has previously achieved remarkable milestones with two successful Chandrayaan missions. Chandrayaan-1, launched on October 22, 2008, featured a Lunar Orbiter, while Chandrayaan-2, launched on July 22, 2019, included a Lunar Orbiter, Lander (Vikram), and Rover (Pragyan). The Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter continues to provide valuable scientific insights.

The launch of Chandrayaan-3 marks another proud moment for India and its dedicated scientists at ISRO. The nation eagerly awaits the groundbreaking discoveries and scientific advancements that will be made during this remarkable mission. After completing the mission at 14:51:07 IST the minister of state addressed the ISRO and recalled the words of Great PM Modi “sky is not the limit”
